Visor Cap of Captain E. Hale Codding

E. Hale Codding 3 Jan 1892- 23 Nov 1976 (from his obituary) Hale enlisted as a machinist mate, second class.  Due to his knowledge of machinery and engines, he soon was advanced to the rate of machinist mate and then ensign.  With the war ended, he remained in the Naval Reserve, but with his active duty over, he served for a year on the "Whitemarsh", an exploring ship. In 1940, with war clouds gathering, Hale was called back to active duty with the US Navy.  He served for 2 years in the New York Navy Yard at Brooklyn as a superintendent of ship repairs.  While there, he had charge of the repairs on the French Battleship "Richelieu".  In 1944, he was given command of a ship repair base at Noumea, New Caledonia, where he remained until the end of WWII.  It was while stationed there that he attained the rank of captain.

The cap is in good solid condition with just some minor discoloring on the bullion "scrambled eggs". His name is stenciled inside as shown in the picture. The two black and white photos are of the Richelieu, but are only examples and not included in this sale.
